What Digital Marketing Actually Is (And What It’s NOT)

One of the questions I get the most is: “Is digital marketing basically an MLM?”
It’s a fair question. A lot of people hear about making money online and immediately assume it must be some kind of recruiting structure or pyramid-style system. But the truth is much simpler.
Short answer — no.
Digital marketing isn’t an MLM. It’s not about recruiting people, building teams under you, or convincing others to join something. Digital marketing is simply using the internet and social media to promote products, services, or businesses. That’s it.
What Digital Marketing Actually Is
Digital marketing is happening all around you every day, whether you realize it or not.
Think about it like this: When someone shares a product they love on TikTok…When a small business promotes their items on Instagram or Pinterest…When someone creates a guide, course, or printable and sells it online…When brands pay creators to make UGC (user generated content) for their products… That’s digital marketing.
It’s simply the use of online platforms and digital tools to connect products or services with the people who might want them.
Instead of traditional marketing like billboards, TV ads, or newspaper ads, digital marketing happens online where people are already spending their time.
Social media, websites, email lists, blogs, and online marketplaces all play a role.
At its core, digital marketing is a skill.
Just like photography, graphic design, or writing, it’s something you learn and improve over time.
What Digital Marketing Is NOT
One of the biggest misconceptions is that digital marketing is some kind of multi-level marketing structure.
But there are some very clear differences.
Digital marketing is not:
• Recruiting people under you
• Building a “downline”
• Depending on someone else’s success to make money
• Locked into selling one company’s product forever
There isn’t someone tracking your income. There isn’t a hierarchy you have to climb. And there’s no requirement to recruit anyone. Instead, digital marketing gives you the ability to choose how you want to use the skills you learn. That’s what makes it so flexible.
What Digital Marketing Can Include
Once you understand the basics, digital marketing can take many different forms depending on your interests, goals, and lifestyle.
Some people choose to:
• Sell their own digital products. (Things like guides, templates, printables, planners, or courses.)
• Do affiliate marketing (Sharing products they already use and earning a commission if someone buys through their link.)
• Create UGC (user generated content) (Making videos or photos for brands to use in their marketing.)
• Work with brands on partnerships (Promoting products through social media collaborations.)
• Promote products on platforms like TikTok, Pinterest, Instagram, or Amazon.
• Grow an existing business online (Using digital tools to reach more customers.)
The possibilities are wide open because the skills apply across many industries.
Why Learning Digital Skills Matters
One of the reasons digital marketing is becoming so popular is because the internet has created new opportunities for people to work differently.Instead of being limited to one traditional path, digital skills allow you to build income streams in ways that fit your life.
You can:
• Work from home
• Build something at your own pace
• Create multiple streams of income
• Choose the platforms that work best for you
• Scale your efforts over time
And the skills themselves are valuable far beyond just selling something online. Understanding content creation, marketing psychology, social media strategy, and online platforms can benefit almost any business.
My Personal Experience
For me, learning these skills completely changed the direction of my life. I originally came across digital marketing when I saw a another ranch mom talking about it on TikTok. She shared how learning these skills allowed her to build income online and ultimately leave teaching to stay home with her daughter. At the time, I was teaching and trying to figure out how I could eventually stay home with our daughter too so it just made sense. I decided to learn more.
What I discovered was that digital marketing wasn’t about one specific product or one specific opportunity. It was about learning the skills behind how the online world works. Once you understand those skills, you can apply them in many different ways. That’s exactly what I started doing.
Over time, those skills allowed me to transition away from teaching and stay home with Kopelyn.
Not because of one product. Not because of one platform. But because of the skills behind it.
The Best Part About Digital Marketing
One of my favorite things about digital marketing is that it can grow with your life. You can keep it simple and treat it like a side project. Or you can build it into a full business. You can focus on content creation, digital products, affiliate marketing, or helping grow other businesses online. There isn’t one path. And there isn’t one definition of success. You get to decide what works best for your season of life.
Final Thoughts
Digital marketing isn’t a pyramid scheme. It isn’t a recruiting structure. And it isn’t something reserved for influencers with huge followings. At its core, digital marketing is simply learning how to use the internet to connect people with products, services, or ideas. And once you learn those skills, you can apply them in ways that fit your lifestyle, your goals, and your values.
For me, those skills created the flexibility to stay home with my daughter while still building something meaningful. And that’s why I’m so passionate about sharing what I’ve learned. Because sometimes all it takes is understanding how it actually works.
